How does all this work?

The process of creating a website is actually very easy. All you need is a domain name and a web server.

The www vs. the internet

One way to understand the relationship between the internet and the World Wide Web (www) is to think about the internet as a series of pipes that allow you to access the files on the World Wide Web (www). Every file on the web links to other files, so when you visit a website with a web browser (e.g. Firefox or Safari, or Google Chrome) you are looking at a text file that traveled to your computer through the internet.

What is web hosting?

In order for us to access all the files that make up a website they have to be stored on a computer that is connected to the internet and has specific software on it that allows it to “serve” the files. This computer is called a web server, and managed by a web hosting service like yourarthere.net.

What else do I need?

In addition to being able to put your files on a web server you also need a domain name so others know the address to find your website. In the case of Google, Inc., their domain name is google.com. Many artists choose a domain name using their name or some other clever phrase. You will want to purchase your domain name from a domain name registrar like dreamhost.com

Anything else?

Once you sign-up for yourarthere.net and get domain name you are ready to create your website. There are many ways to do this at yourarthere.net with easy to use content management systems like indexhibit, Wordpress, or iWeb. You can also design and code your website yourself to have the utmost control of your design.

Now what?

That’s it! You're ready to apply to yourarthere.net!
