Formed out of basement recording sessions in Bloomington, IN by Aaron Deer (now out of Oakland, CA), The Horns of Happiness began as one man's project and has since grown into much more. His first foray with the Horns (2004's 'A Sea as a Shore"), on the Secretly Canadian imprint, made more than one critic take notice of its lo-fi sweep and warm experimentalism. Would I Find Your Psychic Guideline EP followed in 2006 with more warm jets of loose-knit trip-beat, this time with percussionist/vocalist Shelley Harrison firmly on the band's roster. Now a trio, The Horns of Happiness midwestern minimal foundations have given way to a treasure trove of pounding rhythms and repetitive organ lines not unlike New York's Oneida at their devilish best, or 20-odd years earlier when Philip Glass and Suicide brought the minimalist keyboard aesthetic to the rest of the world...but don't be mislead, there's nothing overly simple happening here.
